Every face holds another face. I paint until the spirit underneath starts looking back. — Tanasuda Benecke

02 — Biography

The artist behind the masks.

Tanasuda Benecke is a visual artist working between the digital canvas and acrylic paint. Her practice is instinctive and unplanned — compositions grow outward from a single mark, layering ornament, symbol and watching eyes until a face or creature emerges from the density.

The recurring vocabulary is unmistakable: shamanic masks, totemic figures, labyrinthine line-work and an electric palette that swings from earthy ochre to acid greens and saturated reds. The influence of folk and tribal art meets a contemporary, expressionist energy.

Today her focus is digital painting, where line and colour can be pushed to an intensity that traditional media resist — though the hand, and the acrylic canvas, remain central to the work.

How the work is made

01

Digital painting

Current focus. Built mark by mark on the tablet — thick black contours over luminous, layered colour fields. Each piece can carry hundreds of small ornamental decisions.

02

Acrylic on canvas

The physical counterpart. Bold gestural brushwork and impasto colour, where the totemic faces are pulled directly out of the paint.

03

Line & ink

The skeleton of everything. Dense, meditative pen-work — the patterning and symbols that thread through the whole body of work.
